Todd was born and raised in Albemarle, NC. As a kid, he was heavily involved with the Boy Scouts of America working at Camp Barnhardt as Summer Camp Staff. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and earned his Vigil Honor with the Order of the Arrow in 1990. He attended UNC-Wilmington on a track scholarship where he had plans to be a Biology teacher.
While working at summer camp in 1995, he had a Boy Scout troop of 7 scouts with Downs Syndrome. Their Scoutmaster came to him on arrival on Sunday and asked that he work with them to get them accustomed to water. By Friday of their week at camp, all but 1 qualified as a swimmer. Needless to say, his heart and mind had changed from teaching Biology to Exceptional Children!
After graduation, he worked as a District Executive for the Boy Scouts, and visited Camp Daniel Boone in Haywood County to get ideas for our local camp. While visiting, he was recruited to work for the Daniel Boone Council, where he served as a District Executive for Haywood County.
He accepted a position as an Exceptional Children’s teacher at Canton Middle School in 2001. During summers, he served as the Program Director at Camp Daniel Boone. After 6 years of being in the classroom as an EC teacher, he made the transition to being an Assistant Principal at Pisgah High School. He later moved to North Canton Elementary, Canton Middle School and Waynesville Middle School as Principal. He is married to his wonderful wife Erin, who works as a Nurse Practitioner. They are kept busy with their 4 kids (Savanna, Brooks, Mikey and Case), 2 dogs, 1 cat and occasionally 1 bear in their neighborhood. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking in our beautiful mountains, working at the Woodlot Ministry and golfing.
